A Safe Haven Against Wolves for Alpacas and Goats
In the rural outskirts of Putten in the Netherlands, we realised a well-considered and robust small livestock stable, specifically designed to safely house alpacas and goats. This project demonstrates how functionality, animal welfare and security come together in a clear, practical design, fully aligned with today’s realities.
Thoughtful Layout for Calm and Control
The small livestock stable measures 9160 × 3000 mm and is divided into three separate pens. This layout provides structure, clarity and calm within the group. Both the alpacas and the goats have their own dedicated space, reducing stress and simplifying daily management. Especially for animals such as alpacas and goats, which are sensitive to stimuli and group dynamics, this separation is of great importance.
Comfort and Animal Welfare as a Starting Point
For optimal comfort, Puzzle stable mats were installed throughout the pens. These mats create a stable and comfortable surface while contributing to hygiene and hoof health. A practical hay rack was also added, allowing for efficient feeding and ensuring the animals always have calm and easy access to roughage. Every aspect of this stable is designed for ease of daily use, for both the animals and their owner.
Securely Enclosed and Carefully Engineered
Each pen is accessible via a split stable door equipped with a safe finger-protection lock. These doors allow flexible handling during feeding or cleaning, without compromising safety. The closed, solid construction of the stable prevents unwanted access and makes it highly suitable for situations where protection is essential.
Wolves as a Growing Reality in Europe
The reason for investing in this outdoor stable is both clear and increasingly relevant: the return of the wolf. Not only in the Netherlands, but across multiple European countries, wolves are expanding their territories and posing a growing threat to small livestock. Alpacas, goats and other small animals are particularly vulnerable. A secure, lockable stable is therefore no longer a luxury, but a necessary measure to ensure safety and peace of mind.
A Growing Need for Protection
We see a clear increase in demand from small livestock owners who consciously choose a strong, enclosed shelter where their animals can stay safely during the night and in high-risk periods. This project in Putten is a strong example of that need. The stable offers protection against predators, as well as shelter from weather conditions and other external influences, creating a calm and secure environment for the animals and reassurance for their owners.
Safety, Comfort and Durability in One Solution
This project illustrates how a well-designed small livestock stable is more than just a structure. It is an investment in animal welfare, safety and peace of mind. A durable, future-proof solution for alpacas, goats and other small livestock, designed to meet the challenges of our time.
